Aspen Airport was founded by Walter Paepcke and John Spachner as a privately owned and public use gravel landing strip in 1946. At the time, it was only used by Aspen Institute, the forerunner to Aspen Airways. In the start the Aspen Airport consisted only of a log cabin terminal building and a gravel runaway.
In 1956, it was officially deeded the Aspen Pitkin County airport. The original runaway was 5200 feet long and in 1963 it was elongated at 6000 feet then later in 1983 was elongated and widened to 7006 feet and 100 feet wide with its final adjustment of 8006 feet long and 100 feet wide. The Ase airport has a field elevation of 7837 feet making it the highest commercial airport in the US. It has a latitude of 39.191097 and longitude of -106.817535.
