The Budapest Liszt Ferenc international airport was intended as jointly for civil-military-sporting purposes. Civil facilities were to be built up in the north-western and military ones in the south-western section.

Since 1 November 1985, passengers have been received in Terminal 2, a 24,000-square-meter facility funded with Austrian loans under general contracting. Liszt Ferenc Airport was used by Malév passengers, and then by those of Lufthansa, Air France, and Swissair.

The old terminal of Liszt Ferenc airport continued to receive residual airline traffic under a new name, Terminal 1. Use of the new 3,707-metre runway was started in September 1983.
